JAI #399: Just Add Water

Welcome back to the new Just Add Ink challenge. This week Chloe has set the task, and it's to Just Add Water. I love how broadly that could be interpreted!

I hadn't done any colouring for a while, so I decided to pull out my Watercolour Pencils, Wink Of Stella and the Just Add Colour DSP. The underwater design on one of the sheets was perfect for this challenge!

It was heaps of fun using the different colour pencils to blend and create some more realistic pictures. The seaweed at the bottom right uses Old Olive and Daffodil Delight, and the seahorses used a mix of Calypso Coral, Pumpkin Pie, Daffodil Delight and Basic Grey.

I love using my Wink Of Stella pen to smooth out the colours. It's a great way to blend the pencil lines that also adds a gorgeous shimmer to the card. Hard to photograph, but trust me, it's shimmery! I love how the Basic Black card base makes the colours pop.

I was a bit tired of colouring by the time I got to the inside, so I cheated a little and used the fish stamps from Jar Of Love to finish the card. Do you cheat a little like this sometimes?

JAI #381: Just Choose Two

Welcome to a new challenge!

This week Jan has set the challenge for us at Just Add Ink, and it's a Just Choose Two week.

As you can see, you need to choose two from embossing paste, colouring and sequins. Now, if you had of asked me a couple of weeks ago, I would have said I'd most likely go for the paste and colouring, but to my surprise, I went for sequins instead of the paste.

I actually started this card with the intent of using it in last night's Art With Heart blog hop, but somewhere along the way I realised it would be better for this week's JAI challenge.

I started with a piece of the garden themed Just Add Colour SDSP. I was only going to colour a few bits and pieces of the design with my watercolour pencils, but before I knew it, I'd coloured the whole piece. It was far too busy to use sit the girl from Garden Girl on top, so I decided to tone down the SDSP with vellum. I decided to stitch it down, and then thought that I may as week go the whole hog and turn it into a shaker card by adding sequins under the vellum.

I really loved colouring the girl from Garden Girl, but I think this little bit on the inside is my favourite part. I recently made a similar scene for an ATC swap I hosted, and thought that a simpler version of it would be a great way to finish off the inside.

AWH October Blog Hop: Designer Series Paper

Tonight the Art with Heart team girls are sharing some wonderful ideas to inspire you with our Designer Series Papers. This month is the start of the new Stampin’ Up! year and we have a special promotion on our Designer Series Paper, buy 3 get 1 FREE for the month of October and there is no limit!

I decided to go with the Just Add Colour SDSP. It wasn't a pack that originally took my fancy, but once I got hold of some and had a play, I was hooked!

I especially loved the house paper, so that was the sheet I reached for when starting to think of ideas for this month's Blog Hop. I found this section that was easy to trim down to a small row.  It's slightly longer than a regular sized card, but that didn't worry me. I coloured the houses with my Watercolour Pencils, and used my Wink Of Stella pen to help blend them in places - especially the windows.

Eclipse cards have been all the rage lately, so I decided to turn this card into one. After I'd coloured the houses, I used my Large Letters dies to cut the word 'home' into the panel. I then adhered the panel to a piece of Basic Black cardstock, and then adhered the letters back in place, but with Dimensionals so that they sat up. From the side you can see bits of black popping through, but from the front it is much less obvious,

Does this house on the inside remind you a little of a castle? I think it's the roofline.

Scrapping With Just Add Colour

I mentioned on my Facebook page that over the past few weeks I've been doing a huge cull of my paper craft magazines. I went through each one, ripped out the pages that interested me, and then recycled the magazines. It was a huge job, but I did it in little bits and pieces so it was more manageable. Apart from the obvious benefit of reducing the amount of stuff in my craft space, it had the unexpected effect of re-igniting my passion for scrapping. I made myself wait until I'd finished all of the magazines before I started though, because I knew I'd never finish if I didn't!

One of the things that inspired me was a layout that tore an opening in the page, and had the photo sitting behind the paper. I'd recently taken this silly snap of Alex through some leaves, which tied in perfectly with the leaf paper in the new Just Add Colour SDSP pack.

I started by spritzing the paper with a mix of Isocol and Garden Green ink. Once it dried, I held my Garden Green reinker above the page, squeezed it gently and then tapped on the nozzle to get the dark splatters across the paper. I also dripped some water onto some of the splatters to get a different effect.

I then worked out where I wanted the photo to go and poked a hole from the back of the paper. I used my fingers to widen the hole until it was the size I was after.  I curled the torn strips around a pencil so that they sat away from the opening.

I asked Alex to write some lists of things he likes and dislikes before I started the layout. I wasn't sure how I was going to incorporate these without taking away from the photo, until I had the brilliant idea of writing one little piece of information in some of the larger leaves. I really like that it's kind of hiding in plain sight! It also means I can easily add to it when I think of little bits to write about Alex Most importantly, Alex gave it his seal of approval when I showed him the page.

Hopefully I'll have some more layouts to show you I the coming weeks. I have another one all but finished, and I've printed a vintage photo to go on a third page. Stay tuned!
