K For Kaleidoscope

This week at Just Add Ink our challenge is to Just Add K. You can see the card I made for the challenge here.

Today's card is a reject card for the challenge. Don't get me wrong - I like the card - I just decided to go in a different direction.

So the "K" in this card is the technique - it's called a Kaleidoscope card and you can find instructions for making it here. Basically you create a little triangle template from acetate and use it to outline each of the 8 wedges in the card. They are then fussy cut and arranged in a circle.

This card ended up quite large - about 6 inches square. What I thought were smallish triangles turned into a big card! Those hippos were just begging to be turned into a kaleidoscope, don't you think?

To make the the strip across the bottom of the inside, I used my trimmer to cut a straight line. I lifted the blade when I ran into a hippo and dropped it back down after it. I then used my snips to fussy cut around the hippos. A little bit of extra effort, but worth it I think.

So now I'm off to think about what other DSP I have that I could use to make a Kaleidoscope card. Are you thinking about it too?

A Fishy CASE

I recently got around to purchasing the new set of Embossing Mats, and have been having some fun with them. As is often the case, I found a card to CASE for my first try with them. You can find the card I CASEd here at Kathy Maurer's blog. It was such a fun card that I couldn't resist CASEing it!

I kept the card pretty much the same - only a few minor changes. I switched the colour of the card base, simply because I didn't have enough of the colour Kathy used.  I also used some retired epoxy dots to use for the air bubbles rather than rhinestones.

Can you see better in this picture - the long swirly die from Swirly Scribbles was used to emboss the cardstock base and represent waves? Perfect for the little fishies to swim in!

Kathy didn't show the inside of her card, so I was on my own here. I couldn't resist adding more fish and using the bubbles from my favourite background stamp underneath.

JAI #413: Just Add Colour

Hi!

Welcome to the new Just Add Ink challenge. This week Di has given us this very cool Colour Combo to work with.

I think this one is lots of fun! It includes the new core colour, Granny Apple Green. Don't have it yet? Easy - substitute a different green. Maybe Old Olive or Pear Pizzazz? As long as it's a similar colour, it's still OK.

I purchased the Bike Ride bundle just before the end of the last Annual Catalogue. I'd been on the fence about the bundle all year, and when it carried over I decided to take the plunge. It's such a fun set, that was perfect for these fun colours.

How cute is that dog, popped up on the back of the bike, looking very happy with himself?

So cute that I decided to pop another dog on the inside!

Old & New Are Better Together

Hi!

Today's card is one that features some old favourite Stampin' Up! stamps with some new product. It's Lovely As A Tree and Nature's Poem DSP. Although the DSP is a part of the new Nature's Poem suite of products, it was also designed to compliment the everlasting Lovely As A Tree stamp set.

I love this pattern from the DSP pack. The veiny, translucent leaves are just gorgeous! I thought the softer, muted colours (there's also the same pattern, but in a richer colour palette in the pack) were very suitable for a more masculine sympathy card.

All that Crumb Cake looked a little stark on it's own, so I stamped the tree from LAAT in the corner. Although it doesn't stand out much, it really adds some interest to the card. Any how gorgeous does Crumb Cake look teamed with Tranquil Tide?

I let the inside mirror the outside by using a smaller strip of the Nature's Poem DSP. It's definitely a pack to add to your DSP stash - or should I say DSP hoard? LOL!

Some Last Goodbyes

One last double post with cards made with retiring products!

My first card today is a CASE of this card by Karina Chin. There are a few differences - I used a different colour card base and top panel, and I left off the scalloped circle layer. I also placed my sentiment in a different spot. I also used a greater range of colours from the Naturally Eclectic DSP to colour my butterflies.

I love how the butterflies looks if they are in motion - they really give life to the card. Fussy cutting and popping some of them up on Dimensionals really adds to the look.

Can you see that I stamped them again on the inside, in Soft Sky ink so that they are a lovely, subtle background for the sentiment?

My second card is also a CASE, this time it's one of the cards in this post by Kate Morgan. I changed the proportions of the Petal Garden DSP pieces a little, used a different ribbon and made my sentiment panel a little fancier. Oh, and I used a different base card colour.

The flower is from the Better Together stamp set. Would you believe it's the only rose stamp I own? I coloured it with my Calypso Coral and Old Olive Blends. Did you know that the Doilies are retiring? They are being replaced by a gorgeous pearlised doily, which is so pretty!

I used a couple of off cuts to finish off the inside. The DSP comes in a 6x6 inch stack, so I seem to end up with lots of little strips of DSP. The best way to use them is on the inside!

Guy Greetings With A True Gentleman

Hi!

Today I have a card for you that I made using a couple of retiring products. One I will certainly miss is the Guy Greetings stamp set. I particularly like the font - it's a little but fancy, but not too fussy for a masculine card. For this card, I've made the Happy Birthday sentiment the focus, aided by the Tailored Tag punch, a True Gentleman button, and some Linen Thread. All three of those are carrying over. Yay!

I used some of the image stamps in Guy Greetings to create a background for my card. I simply put 4 stamps on one block to allow me to stamp them all in one step. I then just repeated until I covered the card front.

I love the mix of colours in the True Gentleman DSP. For this card I selected patterns that were mostly Night Of Navy, Tranquil Tide and Very Vanilla. Three colours make it easy to get a harmonious colour scheme.

I couldn't resist adding another strip of the DSP to the inside. It's such a cool geometric pattern, and I really like the way it looked as an incomplete section of the pattern.
